International Conference on Indian Diaspora by the Dept. of English

Two-Day International Conference on INDIAN DIASPORA IN TEXTS AND CONTEXTS

Organized by
The Department of English, Manbhum Mahavidyalaya
in collaboration with IQAC, MMV

Concept Note

James Procter (2007) defines ‘diaspora’ as both a geographical phenomenon and a theoretical concept that stands for the physical movement of people from one country to another across borders and for a particular way of understanding world order and cultural representations. The concept of the diaspora itself has travelled a long distance over time. It has slowly emerged as an umbrella term to include different kinds of dispersions.
The Indian diaspora too is widespread and defies any form of homogenization. Historically, it is broadly divided into two phases: colonial and post-colonial and is spread all over the world across religious, state, linguistic and political boundaries. Indian diasporic authors such as V.S. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Rohinton Mistry, Bharati Mukherjee, Amitav Ghosh, Jhumpa Lahiri, Anita Desai, M.G. Vassanji, Kiran Desai et al have also got phenomenal global recognition. Some of them have even bagged internationally acknowledged awards. Indian contribution to Diaspora studies, however, is not limited only to the works of authors of Indian origin. Some theoreticians such as Vijay Mishra, Bed Prasad Giri, and Sudesh Mishra have made significant contribution to the development in the field and are now considered as no less important than critics like William Safran and Khachig Tölölyan.
This conference will examine the historical, geographic, cultural, and political determinants of Indian diaspora and their negotiations with Indian diasporic art, literature and cinematography. In so doing, the conference will also seek an engagement with concepts and realities such as multiculturalism, interculturalism, internal diaspora, postcolonialism, religious divides, racial and ethnic formations and globalization.
